Accessibility

Everyone should be able to find their way into a church, including online. We want theway.host, and the church websites made with it, to work for people who use screen readers, keyboards, magnification or voice control, and for people who are new to computers.

Our goal

We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2, level AA across theway.host and the church site designs we provide.

What we've done

• Church site designs use real headings, landmarks and a "skip to content" link, and colour pairs are checked for readable contrast.
• Colour choices in the builder are limited to ones that stay readable, and the builder warns in plain words if a custom colour would be hard to read.
• When you add a photo, the builder asks you to describe it for people who can't see it (or mark it as decoration).
• Pages are built to work with a keyboard, with a visible focus outline. Dialogs (such as "Remove this page?") trap focus and choose the safe option first.
• Plain language throughout, with sizes from small to large for church site text.
• Fonts are served from our own server, so pages don't wait on outside services.

What we know isn't there yet

• Moving sections around inside the website builder's page canvas works best with a mouse or touch screen. The sidebar tools ("Add to this page", pages, look and feel) work by keyboard.
• Content a church writes or uploads (for example photos with no description or PDFs) is up to the church. We nudge, but can't fix it for you.
• Payment pages hosted by payment companies follow their own accessibility work.
